The Pompey Museum, Nassau, the Bahamas

This museum on Bay Street in Nassau, close to the Straw Market, contains such exhibits as The Road To Freedom, which interprets the course of slavery, abolition and emancipation in the islands through a variety of artifacts and historical documents. Open 10 until 4:30, Monday through Friday, and 10 until 1 on Saturday; closed Sunday and national holidays. Admission is $1 for adults; 50¢ for children under 12.  242-326-2566.

Getting There:

For visitors arriving by air, the Bahamas are served through Nassau by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe, and to a slightly more limited degree through Freeport.

The Out Islands are served mainly by Bahamas Air via connections in Nassau and Freeport.
